US employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, sharply below market expectations of 84,000-90,000, in a sign of a significant slowdown in hiring. The weak jobs report also pushed Treasury yields lower while lifting US equity futures as traders lowered expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike.
